Polestar Commits to Advanced Autonomous Driving for Polestar 3 and 4 SUVs
Who wouldn’t want to experience the convenience and excitement of autonomous driving in a Polestar vehicle?
Polestar is staying true to its promise of providing advanced autonomous driving features for its Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUV models. Additionally, a more affordable rear-wheel drive option for the Polestar 3 is in the works. Brent Ellis, Polestar’s global head of product communications, revealed this information during the international launch of the vehicles in Spain. The car-maker has been collaborating with Luminar and Mobileye to develop these options.
Polestar has partnered with LiDAR provider Luminar and autonomous driving specialists Mobileye to incorporate advanced autonomous driving capabilities into its Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUV models. Brent Ellis, Polestar’s global head of product communications, shared this exciting news with Australian media during the vehicles’ international launch in Spain. The company has made significant progress in preparing for the production of these features.
The LiDAR package, developed in collaboration with Luminar, can be added as an option to the Polestar 3, with plans to make it a standard feature in future model years. This system will complement the existing Pilot Assist technology available in all Polestar models. By integrating three cameras into the existing array of sensors and cameras, the LiDAR package will provide an extra layer of driver assistance. Furthermore, Polestar aims to continuously enhance this technology as regulations permit, unlocking additional features and improving the overall driving experience.
Polestar has also introduced its Mobileye Chauffer technology, which builds upon the SuperVision software found in the Polestar 3 and 4. The Mobileye Chauffer allows for eyes-off, point-to-point autonomous driving on highways, as well as eyes-on driving in other environments. This groundbreaking technology positions Polestar as a leader in autonomous driving, with the goal of eventually offering autonomous driving capabilities wherever customers desire.
In a statement from last year, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the Polestar 4’s production readiness. He highlighted the potential of the collaboration with Mobileye in pushing innovation for the Polestar 4 electric performance SUV coupe. Ingenlath acknowledged that driving oneself is not always enjoyable, and the introduction of autonomous driving technology would make future journeys more pleasurable for customers.
As for pricing, the Polestar 3 starts at $132,900 (plus on-road costs), while the Polestar 4 starts at $81,500 (plus on-road costs). However, Polestar has hinted at an even more affordable option for the Polestar 3. A rear-wheel drive model is set to be released before the end of the year. Further details about this alternative will be disclosed closer to the launch date. Although specific specifications remain undisclosed, it is expected that the rear-driven Polestar 3 will utilize the same rear motor as its all-wheel drive counterpart, delivering an estimated output of around 180kW. Moreover, the rear-wheel drive variant is likely to be powered by the 111kWh battery pack found in dual-motor models, resulting in an extended range beyond the 628km figure of the dual-motor Polestar 3 Long Range.
The eagerly anticipated Polestar 3 range is set to launch in Australia next month, followed by the Polestar 4 coupe-SUV in August. Car enthusiasts can look forward to a thorough international launch review of the Polestar 3 and 4 range from Spain on GoAuto’s website in the near future.
