Victorians Can Now Ditch the Wallet: Digital Driver’s Licences Coming Soon!
Are you ready to leave your physical driver’s licence behind and step into the digital age?
Get ready to say goodbye to your physical driver’s licence, because Victoria is rolling out digital driver’s licences starting May 1st. After a successful trial in Ballarat last year, the state government is confident that this new form of identification will revolutionize the way Victorians go about their daily lives.
The state government of Victoria has announced that starting May 1st, Victorians will have the option to carry a digital copy of their driver’s licence on their mobile phones. This move comes after a successful trial of the technology in Ballarat last year, which received positive feedback from users.
The government has been working closely with various organizations that rely on photo identification, such as bars, restaurants, Victoria Police, and Australia Post, to ensure a smooth transition to digital licences.
According to Victoria’s minister for roads and road safety, Melissa Horne, this new technology will make everyday tasks much easier for Victorians. Whether it’s driving around, renting a car, collecting a package, or visiting a licensed venue, digital driver’s licences will provide convenience and simplicity.
More than 4.5 million Victorians who hold full driver’s licences, ride motorcycles, or operate heavy vehicles will be eligible to download their digital licences starting May 1st. This state-wide launch marks a significant milestone in embracing digital identification.
The digital driver’s licences have undergone extensive privacy and security testing. They boast features such as dynamic holograms and timed QR codes, which can be scanned by businesses and authorities to verify authenticity and prevent fraudulent use. Additionally, these licences can be updated in real-time if there are any changes to licence conditions or personal information.
Victoria’s minister for government services, Gabrielle Williams, emphasized the demand for digital identification among Victorians. Starting from next month, millions of Victorians will have access to digital driver’s licences through their smartphones, along with other government-issued cards like the Working with Children Check, Seniors Card, or Fishing Licence.
If you’ve already downloaded either the VicRoads or Services Victoria app, you will automatically receive your digital licence once it has been processed in May. You will be alerted through a push notification or email.
While fully licensed drivers will be able to enjoy the benefits of digital licences from May 1st, learners and probationary licence holders will have to wait until 2025 to access their digital licences.
